Ritherdon started designing door and frame units nearly 40 years ago. At that time the answer to this question was clear. The electricity and gas boards owned the meter box and were responsible for them. Then came deregulation, and these organisations were no longer necessarily the billing company, so they no longer had this responsibility.So it appears that the consumer (usually the property owner), is responsible for its maintenance.

Ritherdon have been manufacturing various enclosures probably since the 1940's and, up until the 1990's, had only used stainless steel for special circumstances where the extra cost could be justified.  However, in the late 1990's, when the cheaper, ferritic stainless known as 3Cr12 was specified as EN1.4003 in Europe, Ritherdon saw its potential as a cost effective and superior material for external enclosures.
