Our Passively Safe Roadside Cabinet is the newest addition to Ritherdon’s range of highways products. Developed in conjunction with Manchester University’s School of Mechanical, Aeronautical and Civil Engineering (see UMI3 article – July 2013, page 6), this innovative and pioneering design of this external enclosure has pushed the boundaries of possibility in terms of passive safety. The Passively Safe Cabinet was officially crash-tested to the specifications outlined in European standard EN 12767.

The standard EN2767 defines the conditions of testing in the European passive safety crash test.  It also sets thresholds in a set of parameters that must be measured.  Results below these limits in the test demonstrate that an item of street furniture will cause significantly less harm when hit by a vehicle to its occupants.  The street furniture can then be described as a passive safe product. The EN12767 crash test requires two full-scale collisions to be carried out with a car hitting the product itself in order to measure the amount of energy absorbed by the passive safe product and classify it accordingly.

For the EN12767 testing and certification, two impact tests were performed. In the first test a 900 kg car was accelerated using a drag cable and released to hit the passively safe cabinet at 35 km/h to ensure that the product behaved as expected at a lower speed. This was repeated with an identical car for a second test impact at a much higher 100 km/h (62mph).

The EN12767 test was conducted on a passive safe version of the Ritherdon RB800 enclosure by TRL at their test facility in Berkshire in early January 2013.

The passively safe cabinet also joins the Ritherdon FlexiPole and the Orion retention socket and the Poleplug products to make Ritherdon a market-leader in passive safety and passively safe products.
